Physical Education (P.E)
At Galley Common Infant, we follow a scheme of work called 'REAL PE'. Please follow the links at the bottom of the page to see an overview of our PE curriculum, curriculum maps for each year group and the clear progression built into this scheme:
What is Real P.E?
Real PE gives EVERY child the physical literacy, emotional and thinking skills to achieve in PE, Sport and life.
A unique, child-centred approach transforming how we teach PE to include, challenge and support for EVERY child. The real PE programme included training, the very best innovative resources and is supported by Jasmine - our real learning platform.
real PE provides us with fun and simple to follow Schemes of Work and supports our teachers to give them the confidence and skills to deliver outstanding PE.
Why Real P.E?
Real PE believes in giving every child the physical literacy, emotional and thinking skills to achieve in PE, Sport and life. This too is a vision we at Galley Common Infant School believe in. Therefore we implement the Real PE scheme, a unique, child centred approach that transforms how we teach PE to include, challenge and support every child.
This scheme of work develops the key abilities children need to be successful within PE and Sport and across the curriculum through six key cogs, these are: Creative, Cognitive, Health and Fitness, Personal, Physical and Social. It is fully aligned to the National Curriculum and Ofsted Requirements and focuses on the development of agility, balance and coordination, healthy competition and cooperative learning.
Jasmine's Journey
Creating positive relationships with physical activity for life
Multi-ability cogs
As a school, we promote learning in six key areas or multi-abilities which underpin learning in PE, extra- curricular sport and are transferable to the learning in all other areas of the wider curriculum. As a school using the realPE approach, we refer to these areas as COGS.
These are:
- Personal Skills
- Social Skills
- Cognitive Skills
- Physical Skills
- Creative Skills
- Knowledge of Health and Fitness
Learning experiences are focussed specifically upon each COG in turn over each curricular year, and are revisited often. This is coupled with a clear focus upon fundamental skills, with sessions allowing a progression of skills to be practiced before applying in adapted traditional and non-traditional games.
Physical sessions are designed to promote ambitious learning with personalised outcomes. Success and failure is reviewed collaboratively and celebrated. Learners are encouraged to give feedback to others in order to become confident peer coaches. Through the use of choice and personal best challenges, children are expected to take an active responsibility for their learning journey.
